The staircase, which also serves as an emergency exit, was cluttered with chairs, mattresses, and other construction materials.

Great location near Notre Dame. The Latin Quarter with its nightlife is nearby. The room itself is quite decent, not big, but we didn't expect anything different from Paris. The staff is very pleasant and polite.
Instead of a double bed, there were 2 single beds, so I would advise active newlyweds to be more inventive. The soundproofing in the room is terrible, you can hear everything if someone walks in the corridor in the morning. Several floors are currently under renovation, so if you plan to be in the room during the day, get used to the sounds of drilling.
